Thoughts of Past Interns

Of all of the jobs at which I’ve enjoyed working, my internship with the Minnesota Women’s Consortium has by far been one of my most favorites. Throughout the year I spent at the Consortium, I was not only able to gain greater knowledge of policy processes, nonprofit networking, and the complex ins and outs of connecting women’s organizations with one another, but I also met and became friends with some of the most intelligent, passionate, and supportive women I have ever met: the Consortium staff. Working at the MWC gave me both a broader and deeper perspective on a range of issues affecting women, as well as helping me to see the various ways in which I can contribute to creating a better society through my own presence in the nonprofit world.

I highly encourage students and individuals with even the slightest interest in women’s issues to apply for an internship with the Minnesota Women’s Consortium. From conducting research, to writing newsletter articles, to lending a helping hand at workshops and conferences, you will gain not only incredible knowledge, but also invaluable experiences. The Consortium staff, while small in numbers, is a mighty force of knowledge, experience, and enthusiasm. I never felt more supported and encouraged by co-workers than when I was at the Consortium. The women at the MWC gave me the freedom to make my internship fit my needs, while also challenging me to let my beliefs evolve through my experiences at the Consortium. I guarantee that working for the Consortium will change you for the better, as it did for me. Now is a great time to be a feminist, and there is no better place to explore and transform your own feminism than by becoming a part of the most amazing network of women’s organizations that the country has to offer: the Minnesota Women’s Consortium!  Allison MacWilliams-Brooks

My experience as an intern at the unique MN Women’s Consortium was more than beneficial, not only did I gain insight into a women’s non-profit, I had the unexpected privilege of working with a group of fantastically, fun, hard-working women.

I have been able to do a variety of tasks and put my skills to work, attending board meetings and the annual conference, along with writing the 2008 Conference Report.  I enjoyed bringing mail to the Capitol, exploring all the underground walkways, updating the Women’s Action Plan and having meaningful conversations about recent news events, relative to the cause and feel like I have made a small difference in the larger picture.  I have enhanced my communications skills in my 3 months here and have only touched the surface.  I am eager to learn more and accomplish many a thing.

This experience has prepared, confirmed and inspired me to further pursue my life long career of advocating for women’s rights, not only publically, but also privately. I will definitely come back to volunteer in the future.  Jean Piller
