Can you name the 1st woman who ran for U.S. Senate in MN?
The year was 1984 and it was Joan Growe. Although she did not prevail, her love for serving the people of Minnesota continued in her role as Secretary of State. Joan was Secretary of State from 1975 to 1999 and was in the Minnesota House of Representatives previously. Her passion for same-day voter registration (which became law and Minnesota was the first state in the nation to pass this) was prominent when she was a state legislator and ensured the law was followed while she was Secretary of State. We salute and thank you, Joan, in celebration of Women’s History Month!
