March is Women’s History Month

Lest we forget — the following is excerpted from a Minnesota Women’s Consortium Capitol Bulletin in 1998:

Sometimes, it’s easy to forget that women have faced significant discrimination in their own lifetime.  Were you aware that….
Federal employees could be hired and promoted with restrictions on gender? (1962)
There was no federal legislation requiring equal pay for equal work ? (1963)
There were restrictions on the military rank women could hold? (1967)
Creditors could discriminate on the basis of sex or marital status without federal sanctions? (1974)
Marital rape was not a crime? (1976)
There were no women heading major universities? (1978)
The Supreme Court was a male bastion? (1981)
The New York Times did not use “Ms” as a courtesy title for women? (1986)
